Shannon Ridge Vineyards & Winery named 'hot' California winery and brand of 2009

CLEARLAKE OAKS – During a presentation at the 2010 Unified Wine & Grape Symposium held in Sacramento, Shannon Ridge Vineyards & Winery was recognized as a “hot” California winery and brand of 2009.

During the “State of the Industry” opening session a presentation given by a representative of The Gomberg Fredrikson report – the executive marketing report of the wine industry – Shannon Ridge was listed alongside other large names such as Sterling, Bogle, Gnarly Head and Barefoot as the topic hit on the growth and buying trends of the 2009 consumer and their focus on value-priced wines.

Shannon Ridge wine sales have exploded as the new packaging hit the shelves in 2009, with just over 43,000 cases being sold in 2009.

“It really validates all of the hard work that goes into creating a brand from vineyard to bottle, and exciting to see that consumers are enjoying the fruits of our labor!” said Clay Shannon, owner of Shannon Ridge Vineyards & Winery.

In an effort to give back Shannon Ridge will be hosting a “Hearts for Haiti” promotion, and will donate $1 from every bottle purchased in the tasting room to the American Red Cross in support of the Haiti earthquake victims.

Shannon Ridge wines can be found in almost every state around the U.S. For a taste of what Shannon Ridge has to offer, stop by Shannon Ridge Vineyards & Winery Tasting Room at 12599 E. Highway 20, Clearlake Oaks. The tasting room is open from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.

Lake County wines awarded 37 medals in prestigious competition

SACRAMENTO – Lake County wines once again performed well at the 2009 California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition, with 37 wines garnering medals, including one Double Gold, five Gold, 18 Silver and 13 Bronze awards.

First held in 1855, the California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition is by far the oldest wine competition limited to vitis vinifera grapes in America and is firmly established as the most prestigious of American Wine Competitions. Many industry leaders recognize it as the most meaningful of the major competitions restricted to California wines.

At this year’s Wine Competition, more than 2,600 wine entries were received from more than 600 participating wineries. Sixty-eight professional wine judges awarded a total of 1,895 medals, including 43 Double Gold, 220 Gold, 1,028 Silver, and 604 Bronze awards.

It is the only competition that requires all wines to be entered based on the American viticultural area (AVA, also known as an appellation) where the grapes are grown, not where the winery is located.

To further focus on the event’s unique attributes and on the importance of the wine grapes, duplicate awards are presented to each single vineyard grape grower or the winery estate vineyard manager. This applies to all award-winning wines from single vineyards or estate vineyards.

This is the first wine competition in the world ever to honor the grape growers and vineyard managers this way.

Wines produced from primarily Lake County winegrapes were well-represented in medals and in varietals.

This year’s winners included zinfandel, sauvignon blanc, petite sirah, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, sangiovese, primitivo, chardonnay, syrah, muscat, pinot noir, pinot gris and pinot grigio, as well as blends that include other varietals.

Shannon Ridge Vineyards & Winery, which operates a tasting room on Highway 20 in Clearlake Oaks, was awarded Gold with a score of 94 for both the Lake County 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon and the Lake County 2007 Zinfandel. The Lake County 2007 Wrangler Red and the 2008 Lake County Sauvignon Blanc Ranch Collection were each awarded Silver. The Lake County 2008 Chardonnay Ranch Collection, Lake County 2007 Petite Sirah, and Lake County 2007 Syrah were all awarded Bronze.

After meeting at a Napa Valley winery where they both worked, Clay and Margarita Shannon would eventually use their common vision to take the reins with their own winery. Shannon Ridge uses fruit from the High Valley AVA in Clearlake Oaks, where the Shannons have pioneered more than 300 acres of mountain vineyards. Sited in blankets of brick-red earth – at altitudes up to 2,400 feet – the vineyards are nestled between the waters of Clear Lake to the south and snow-capped mountains to the north. The lean and rocky volcanic soil has kept its promise to grow vines that produce small berries with concentrated flavors, which compose the luscious, fruit-driven wines that lift Shannon Ridge’s reputation to the same elevations as the grapes that distinguish it.

Wow, 41 countries and counting

The blog has now been visited by guests from 41 different countries. From as far away as Russia, Iran and Japan. N ow we just have to get some wine to those folks.

New package on the way

After much study, we have upgraded our packaging to a little more sophisticated look. Our previous label served us well but there wasn't enough room on the back label to adequately tell our story. Enjoy the new look and more importantly, the great wine inside. The Sauvignon Blanc 2008 vintage is a stunning example of Lake County fruit and recently received 91 points from the Cellarmaster at Beverages and More in California, Wilfred Wong.

Notes from Clay around 4th of July weekend

Woke up this mornig to find dew and fog at the ranch. Very cool up here right now. Ivan pitched a tent last night down where the fiesta was and I checked on him at 6am and his sleeping bag was wet, and of course both of the dogs that were sleeping with him were wet too from the dew.

Just a few vineyard notes. We have pulled leaves in the fruit zone of most of the vineyards, we normally don’t like to do this but considering all the uneven fruit this year due to the frost we decided to spend around 175,000$$ , so we could open up the vines and then after the leafing (on the cool side of vine only) go in and thin off the uneven fruit. In some cases the vineyards have been blooming for 6 weeks , therefore the fruit is very uneven . but not for much longer. We did not have a committee meeting or a budget review meeting to make this call, we just did it . so I feel comfortable we will be able to have some great quality this year. Some other companys I know are not even considering doing what we have done.

The crop looks on the light side except for zinfandel, it always seems to be heavy.

Next week mike and I will be looking at our chardonnay vineyards and getting a feel for what we have there.

Chris , I saw that roadrunner again yesterday at the picnic area on top of the la sierra vineyard, have not seen him since February. I thought the little bugger was dead. Ivan and I think he is a male as he is very colorful.

Lots of important people taking a look at lake county these days, so finally people are starting to see the value in lake county wine. AND THE REASON IS BECAUSE OF YOU OUT THERE SLUGGING IT OUT AND TALKING ABOUT SHANNON RIDGE EVERY DAY. THANKS

Anyhow, have a great weekend. We will see you soon.
And if anybody asks you for a wine recommendation for the weekend, tell them, “ I GOT 2 WORDS FOR YOU, SHANNON RIDGE”

Wow! It's been almost a year!

Time flys like an arrow, fruit flies like a bananna.

That was a favorite saying of a former employee of mine many years ago. Kind of a clever saying but the point is that time does fly straight and true when you are working hard. Many successes have occurred during the almost 1 year since I joined this venture...here are a few that come to mind...

  • Distributor assignments have taken place in over 26 states.
  • Shannon Ridge Sales staff has grown from 1 (John Girty) to add 4 regional managers and a brand manager.
  • Production has approached 40,000 cases.
  • Shannon Ridge has been and is being poured in high profile accounts like Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, Marriott Hotels, The Speedway Club at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Ballantyne Resort, The Cliff's Communities and Fleming's Steakhouse to name only a few.
  • Shannon Ridge wines have earned over 20 Gold Medals and several 90 point scores from major wine publications.
  • Another 500 acres of property in the Red Hills AVA was added to the 1000 acres of the original property in the High Valley AVA.
  • Wine Warehouse in California picked up Shannon Ridge as one of the few California brands added to their portfolio this year.
  • Clay Shannon is interviewed on the Wine Crush radio show syndicated in over 100 markets.
  • www.justwinepoints.com awards 93 points to the 2007 limited release Shannon Ridge Roussanne (563 cases made) as well as 90 points on Sauvignon Blanc.
  • Two industry publications awarded Shannon Ridge "Top 100" status for producing an exceptional Sauvignon Blanc. Both the Wine Enthusiast and Wine & Spirits Magazines awarded this distinction to Shannon Ridge.

There are many talented people that touch the wines before they ever make it to your glass, folks like Mike Wood, Director of Winemaking production, Celestino CastaƱeda, Vineyard Manager and the hundreds of workers that hand pick the grapes at the perfect ripeness. We could not be where we are without their tireless efforts.....

Continued success, be sure to ask for Shannon Ridge wines at your favorite restaurant or retail establishment and raise a glass...salute.
